Glodok is considered the biggest Chinatown in Indonesia and one of the most highly dense areas of Jakarta since colonial times. The project resides on an irregular narrow lot of land between the dense urban fabric, surrounded by residential, and commercial programs, and a busy day market at the entrance of the lot. How do we create an urban volume and release the stress of density at the same time?
We proposed permeable volumes which channel wind current from north or south. Using the basic typology of residential, where living space and corridors can act as the wind device. We composed tilting units on the northern side to the south side units. Doing such allows wind to circulate and channel through every program of the building while maintaining a good circulatory flow of macro wind to the environment.
The project undergoes a collaboration with YKK AP Indonesia from the early stage of design to conjure the massing intention.
